HANOVER-CABIN-IN-THE-PINESThe town of Hanover is located on U.S. Route 2 next to the Androscoggin River, midway between Rumford and Bethel. Hanover is primarily a residential community with most residents working in the surrounding towns of Rumford, Bethel, and Newry. Hanover children attend school in Rumford and Bethel.

Local business include a general store and restaurant, heavy equipment and logging company, three antique shops, a hair care shop, a real estate office, a sign shop, a campground, carpenters and loggers. Nathaniel Segar first settled Hanover in 1774. Hanover was a mill town using waterpower from the Howard Pond Stream. Mountaintop and valley farms supported families. On February 14, 1843, Hanover was incorporated from Howard’s Gore Plantation and a portion of Bethel on the north side of the Androscoggin River.

Beautiful mountaintop Howard Pond is 109 acres and over 100 feet deep. Trout and salmon are caught in the spring fed waters. Boat ramps built by Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department provide recreational access to the Androscoggin River.
